3 Factors to Consider When Choosing Natural Stone for your Swimming Pool


If you recently moved into a new property and you want to make good use of the available space, then adding a swimming pool can be an excellent idea. This is especially the case today because outdoor living is becoming increasingly popular as homeowners look for different ways to entertain themselves. While there are different materials you can use for your swimming pool, nothing comes close to what natural stone offers. However, there are various natural stones to choose from, and this article highlights key factors to consider when choosing one. 

Porosity -- Naturally, the swimming pool and its surroundings are always exposed to water, which makes it the dampest place in your home. As such, the stones you use on and in your swimming pool must be less permeable to ensure that water doesn't seep through. Since different natural stones have different porosity levels, you must be careful with your choice. For instance, granite has porosity ratio of between 0.4% - 1.5% while slate stands at 0.4% - 5%. If you wish to choose between these two for your swimming pool, then granite would be the right choice. The reason for this is that granite will keep water inside the swimming pool better than slate. However, this is not the approach you want to take for the floor area around the swimming pool because a less porous stone will keep splashed pool water on the surface, thereby posing a risk. Therefore, the best natural stone for the floor area around the pool would be a stone that is a bit more porous, such as slate. 

Heat Conductivity -- Australian summers can be sweltering, especially if you live in one of the coastal cities. If you construct the floor around the swimming pool with concrete, then it will be impossible to walk around your pool barefoot. The only way to protect your feet on such a floor is to wear flip-flops, but that would take away the fun experience around the pool. Most natural stones are excellent at resisting heat, with travertine and granite being excellent choices. Not only are they easy on the feet regardless of heat exposure, but they also eliminate the need for constructing pool covers to keep away direct sun rays. 

Friction Levels -- As mentioned earlier, the pool and its surroundings are the dampest area in your home; therefore, safety is paramount. The friction attribute of natural stone should, therefore, dictate the type of stone to choose for your swimming pool. For example, marble has very low friction due to its smooth surface. Consequently, it would be the wrong natural stone for swimming pool area floor. Naturally occurring granite, on the other hand, has decent friction, which reduces the possibility of slipping when the surface is wet.
